Day 2: Xunantunich (Louis & Kofi Leaders of the day)

March 11, 2012,

Today we woke up to the sound of obnoxious birds and violent card playing. We all survived the long travel day and were ready for the long day to come. After breakfast, we packed our bags and headed out for the Mayan ruins. On the ride we took a quick stop to grab some Belizean snacks. Yumm….. We stopped at a hand crank ferry taking us to the trail to lead us to the ruins. It was a long, steep trip on which we learned so much about each and every SINGLE tree and their medicinal values. We finally made it to the ruins and “boy was it worth it”. There were three different structures, a small one, a medium and an enormous one. We climbed them all, yeah we’re cool. Each structure featured steep staircases, so on one side was a wall, the other side was open and we were careful not to fall backwards. Luckily, we all survived. The view at the top of the large pyramid was incredible. We could see all the way to Guatemala, and the rest of Belize. The descent down seemed just as terrifying, but satisfying when we all made it. We had a great lunch, and headed down the long trail back. Before we left the jungle, we stopped at a very interesting snack break. (A.K.A, a termites nest) Few of us were brave enough to dig in and munch away on the carrot tasting termites. Others scrambled back to the van. We had a short souvenir break (yes we got things for you). (We did Kofi?) To follow was a long 3 hour drive to Mayan Center, where we all settled into our cabins and enjoyed the company of two little Belizean boys. (Evan and Marroquin) We had a delicious dinner and fantastic lemonade. We had so much fun today, and look forward to the adventures tomorrow!

Sincerely, Kofi and Louis
